THE people of Worcester could soon be dressing up as civil war soldiers and taking part in a fun run to celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Worcester.
At last weeks Battle of Worcester Society meeting members talked about putting on an annual fund-raiser that could see hundreds of tourists flock to the city and thousands of pounds made for charity. Society secretary Bernard Mills said the race would be called the Flight of the King, named after the famous escape King Charles II made from the city after losing the bloody battle in 1651.
"It would start at Fort Royal Hill," said Mr Mills, "go down London Road, past the Commandery, the High Street, New Street and to King Charles House."
"It would be about a mile long and a great public event, something that is fun and appealing."
Initial ideas include fun-runners and walkers having to decide whether they are Roundheads or Cavaliers, donning fancy dress accordingly and even getting a King Charles look-a-like to be chased through the streets.
"It would be a huge event to organise," said Mr Mills, "and we'd obviously need the approval of local authorities and the support of Worcester people. We're just sowing seeds at the moment."
