WE had enjoyed a beautiful spring day, and the chocolates we received on arrival at the April meeting also reminded us that Easter was approaching.
Equally appropriate for this time of year was the talk by our guest speaker, Dr Murray Mylechreest, on Gardens In Trust. He pointed out who holds responsibility for our gardens, whether large organisations such as the National Trust, British Heritage or the RHS, smaller groups (city councils, churches, schools for example), or even the individual with his small suburban plot.
We were reminded of the significance of gardens for aesthetics, education, experimentation and of course pure enjoyment, as well as the important role of plant collections and classification. Dr Mylechreest went on to speak of gardens' ever-changing character, where one can see nature at work, add new features or restore original ones, and the crucial role of trustees in preserving our gardens.
The evening continued with a draw for Easter eggs, refreshments including hot cross buns, as well as the usual raffle. The May meeting is our resolutions meeting, plus the popular Pudding Club. New members always welcome on the first Wednesday of each month, 7.30pm in the Village Hall.
