Florence Rees, vice-president, took the April meeting on a warm, sunny afternoon. The business included her own report as delegate at the March council meeting.
Several members had enjoyed a good day culminating with an entertaining talk by Calendar Girl Patricia Stewart in her inimitable Yorkshire way.
She also told us that the sale of the famous calendar had broken all records by making over £2.5 million in aid of leukaemia research - in memory of John, husband of their own WI member.
Florence drew members' attention to an article in the new WI Life magazine which showed a teacosy in a 1929 exhibition - made by Caroline Jenkins a notable WI judge and members of the former Cotheridge and Broadheath WI.
We were then privileged to learn from our speaker Dr Katherine Lack - as a result of her detailed research - the history and amazing journey in 1423 of the Worcester Pilgrim who walked from Worcester to the shrine of St James in Compostela, in northern Spain. His remains were discovered in 1986 and Dr Lack showed slides and has written a book, The Cockleshell Pilgrim, to prove her theory that Robert Southy, a dyer, was known to have lived and worked in Worcester at that time. Our sincere thanks were given by Eileen Chapman.
The May meeting will be at 2.30pm on May 9 in Broadheath village hall - when four members will help our votes for two resolutions to be sent via our link delegate from Swanpool WI to the national AGM on June 6 in the Royal Albert Hall.
All are always welcome as visitors to our meetings.
