A BLITZ on litter was launched at two separate spots in Worcester as volunteers got stuck in to get the city looking spruced-up for the spring.

More than 70 children from Perry Wood Primary and Nursery School, St Albans Close, Ronkswood, donned their gloves and got to grips with their litter pickers.

The teams from year four sorted the litter into paper, plastics, general rubbish and metals, including bicycle wheels, as they collected the rubbish in the nearby Perry Wood.

The pupils were providing a helping hand to Worcester City Council rangers during the litter-pick on Thursday, which also gave them some hands-on experience for their environmental project.

Meanwhile, the Duckworth Worcestershire Trust's Rubbish? Sort it! campaign was in full swing in another part of the city as volunteers went to work in the Pump House Pick.

The clean-up by the environmental charity took place around the Gheluvelt Park and Pitchcroft on the same day. The event was led by Duckworth Worcestershire Trust environmental wardens and Worcester City Council, with support from the police and community support officers.

Volunteers worked between 10am and noon, starting from the Pump House Environment Centre in Waterworks Road.

The Rubbish? Sort It! campaign is run annually by the Duckworth Worcestershire Trust, Worcester City Council, Worcestershire County Council and British Waterways. The aim of the campaign is to encourage practical action to clear litter, encourage recycling and raise awareness of the problems caused by litter.

Events include litter picks, a clear-up of Worcester canal and a poster competition. For more information call the Duckworth Worcestershire Trust on 01905 734934.
