A man was left fighting for his life following another horrific crash on the notorious A449.

The man in his forties was driving a red Alfa Romeo on the Worcester to Kidderminster road, when it is believed to have crashed into a tree in Hawford at 11pm on Friday.

Today a police spokesman described his condition as critical.

Father-of-two Jason Bills, who leaves near the scene of the crash heard the commotion.

"We heard a bang and ran down and there it was," said the 37-year-old, who has campaigned for road safety chiefs to do something to make the route safer.

"He had hit the tree on the driver's side of the car - it was horrific.

"They (the firefighters) ended up cutting him out.

"It took about half an hour - the firemen had to cut the roof off.

"There was a police helicopter, fire engines, the lot."

Mr Bills said something had to be done to stop people being killed and injured on the stretch of road, which has claimed the lives of 12 people in the last nine years, with a further 69 casualties.

In December eighteen-year-old Kyle Gadsby and Martyn Pickering of Droitwich, Stephanie Goodall, aged 16 and 17-year-old Joanne Bibby, both from Worcester died when a car they were travelling in crashed on the A449.

Mr Bills said: "It's ridiculous.

"I am sick to death of seeing dead people on this road and people getting hurt.

"It's getting beyond a joke now."

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said the driver was unconscious when crews arrived at the scene and was taken, by ambulance to Worcestershire Royal Hospital with serious chest, head and leg injuries.

No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the accident and there were no other passengers in the car.

The Worcester News was initially told by an official source the man injured was only 17-years-old.
