A MAN has been found dead in the street in Upton after he suffered a head injury during an ‘unexplained’ incident in the early hours of this morning.
Inspector Andy Smith of West Mercia Police said the 41-year-old male was found outside the White Lion Hotel in Upton High Street and had suffered a head wound.
Police were called to the scene at 4.19am this morning and he was declared dead by a paramedic.
Inspector Smith said: "A deceased male was located in the street outside the White Lion Hotel. At this moment in time the death is being treated as unexplained and not necessarily suspicious.
"The male's next of kin have been notified and the coroner will be informed. The body has been taken away and the scene has been reopened.
"The male had an injury to his head and recognition of life extinct was by a paramedic."
A witness who declined to be named said he was in Upton at around 4.30am this morning and saw the male lying face down in the street.
He saw a police car, a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance from the West Midlands Ambulance Service.
He said: "I pulled up outside the shop and we saw a police car outside the White Lion Hotel. There was a male body lying on the floor, face down. He looked very grey and he was pronounced dead. I heard he was staying at the White Lion Hotel.
“I feel sorry for the family and my thoughts go out to them. It is quite upsetting. You're going about your business and see a dead person on the road."
There was a police presence in Upton this morning with a scenes of crime officer wearing gloves and a mask taking photographs of pavement in front of the hotel where the incident happened.
The scene was protected by Sgt Mark Ransome-Williams, based at Malvern Police Station. There were two police cars and a forensics van outside the White Lion Inn and two cars outside the Star Inn.
The owner of the White Lion Hotel declined to comment.
It is understood there had been a wedding at the hotel earlier in the day.
The deputy Mayor of Upton, Cllr Rosemary Webb, said she had yet to learn the identity of the man who had died.
She said: "We're all shocked at the death. It's a very unusual occurrence in the town. It came as a great surprise. It has resulted in shock in the town."
