MORE than 100 tonnes of rubbish has been collected from canals and towpaths in the West Midlands.
The Towpath Tidy campaign, organised by British Waterways, was held over three weeks throughout the region to clean the canal networks.
Throughout the three weeks of events held in Worcestershire, Birmingham, Staffordshire, Wolverhampton and the Black County, a total of 62 miles were covered and dedicated people worked for a total of 2,169 hours.
Their finds included 53 shopping trolleys, several refrigerators, empty safes, traffic cones, balls, clothes and plenty of beer cans and wine bottles.
The Towpath Tidy events were organised to improve the appearance of West Midlands' canals and towpaths ready for summer and minimise some of the harmful effects of household rubbish on the canal.
