ELECTRONIC signs that inform drivers of any problems on the road are set to be installed on six Worcester roads.

The £280,000 system will tell motorists about accidents, road closures, roadworks and special events so people can plan their journeys and consider alternative routes.

Road safety messages, weather warnings and links to the Worcestershire County Council's website may also be displayed.

The city-bound roads benefiting from the Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be the Southern Link at Whittington Road, Bath Road, Malvern Road, Bransford Road, Crown East and the Droitwich Road, near the Perdiswell park-and-ride site.

The signs will be installed on Wednesday, April 11 and operational from Tuesday, May 1 and were organised by the county council, Halcrow Consulting and Laser Civil Engineers.

John Hobbs, the County Council's Director of Environmental Services, said: "This is the first major step for the county in using technology to make more effective use of our roads and bring about further improvements in public transport services."

A control computer for the signs will be located at County Hall, Worcester and operated by the Network Management Team.
