The Last Pirate is a piece of drama most suited to age seven and above. Children any younger than this would struggle to keep up with the fast dialogue and the jokes made would not mean anything to them.
The story is about a notorious female pirate and the rescue of a boy she kidnaps. The dialogue, though fast, was simple and effective for both children and adults. The use of well-made and thought-out scenery made the performance easy to follow. The boat they used was particularly clever. The use of special effects in the fighting scenes such as Firecrackers to mimic the canon fire added to the tension and thrill of the fight.Children were engrossed in the head-on battle at sea between the two captains who clearly were bitterly opposed to each others presence.
Jain Boon as Captain Jayne put her all into the performance, was thoroughly at ease and a natural in this role, and finally got to fulfil her childhood fantasy of being a pirate.
The play was not my kind of thing but that could be because I am not a child any more. It was clearly enjoyed by the younger members of the audience as they were captivated from start to finish and showed their appreciation with raptures of applause.
