ITALIAN riot police set upon Manchester United fans with batons during a bloody away defeat against Roma last night.
The British Embassy has confirmed that 11 Man United fans were taken to hospital after violence erupted against Roma.
United fans clashed with baton-wielding police inside Rome's Stadio Olimpico.
Two United fans had to be kept in overnight for observation and two Roma supporters also had treatment.
Uefa has announced it will launch an investigation into the crowd trouble involving fans from both sides.
Manchester United warned fans before the game they could be attacked by Roma supporters, sparking criticism from Rome's mayor.
During the game, which Roma won 2-1, both sets of fans could be seen throwing missiles at each other.
Following each goal both sets of fans surged towards the barrier before riot police with shields and batons began striking Manchester United supporters.
One image, shown on TV and in newspapers today, showed a dazed Manchester United fan with blood streaming down from his face.
