SHOPKEEPERS and local people are protesting against a fast food giant's plans to open until 5am in Worcester.
McDonald's, The Cross, has applied to the city council to open until 5am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
Owners of rival shops think it would damage their business, as well as cause further disorder by causing crowds to congregate even later than usual in the city.
Harmesh Khan, aged 25, joint owner of Subway, at The Cross, said: "We had an emergency business meeting last week with other food outlets and are objecting to the McDonald's plan.
"We are very concerned it will hurt the community as it could damage other food places, and lead to them laying off staff. Another big concern is crime and disorder. We stay open until 3am on the weekend and it will mean me worrying about my shop until 5am now."
Kemal Glil, owner of Efes kebab shop, at The Cross, said: "We are worried because that is a big business, and we are a very small one. I'm not happy about it. We stay open until 4am and it would make things difficult if McDonald's was open until 5am."
Shakeey's, Worcester Kebab House and Crown Burger Bar have also objected to the plan, which will be considered by the city council licensing committee later this year.
Residents of nearby Berkeley Court are also against it, with 67-year old John Renwick saying neighbours "are very concerned about extra noise and litter" it could bring.
The manager at McDonald's said he did not wish to comment but confirmed he knew about the objections.
