A NEW home can be built on the site of a former 18-century country manor house where Edward Elgar once gave music lessons.
The owners of the land at Longdon Heath, Upton-upon-Severn, where Ham Court stood until it was demolished in the 1920s, won planning permission from Malvern Hills District Council.
The plans for a single storey classical stone home, to be built facing the restored sunken garden, were approved by councillors against their officers' recommendations.
The scheme was initially approved by the southern area development control committee in January but was referred to the planning committee as the decision was against the council's planning policies.
Members of the planning committee approved the scheme by six votes to four.
David Murray, head of development control, said in his report he was concerned about the quality of the design and nature of the materials. He warned it could be cited as a precedent for further mundane isolated houses to be built.
