OUTRAGED Worcester News readers are doing their bit to help an elderly lady whose scooter was stolen last week.
The newspaper has been contacted by a number of people keen to pitch in and donate cash to the disabled pensioner June McLean, after her mobility scooter was taken from outside her home in Middle Street, Arboretum, on Thursday, February 15.
Our website was also inundated by comments from people appalled at the lack of respect for the 84-year-old.
Worcester band the George Cowley Experience came forward to offer to organise fund-raising concerts to help raise cash for a new scooter for Mrs McLean.
Pete Unwin, speaking for the band, said they were outraged by the theft, especially since their bass player Harvey Wyatt, aged 66, is himself a pensioner living in the Arboretum.
Mr Unwin said: "Furthermore, our third album Ride Again is based loosely around a transport theme and opens with Silver Mobility Scooter, which we often play live."
And their efforts were joined by a generous city resident, who wished to remain anonymous. He said: "I was going to buy a new TV today, but in the circumstances, I couldn't bring myself to buy a new luxury item without also donating some money to something more worthy.
"Therefore I'm offering some of my own money towards a new scooter for this woman.
"Considering these items are not that expensive it would seem a shame if we cannot raise enough money to replace it."
Mrs McLean said she was touched by people's kindness, but was still holding out hope that her scooter could be recovered.
"I'm still hoping that I will get it back. I don't want people to send money if it is not necessary," she said.
"It's so kind of people, what a lovely thought. I do appreciate what people are doing, it's so kind."
She asked people to wait for a while, as it was possible the scooter could be returned, and added: "Even days at the moment might make a difference."
