THE anticipated 150th anniversary Elgar Festival will be opened by the renowned English Symphony Orchestra (ESO).

The ESO will open the special festival with a concert in Worcester Cathedral on Wednesday, May 30.

The four-day festival, which is taking place throughout Worcester, celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sir Edward Elgar in Lower Broadheath, near Worcester.

Directed by Dr Donald Hunt, it promises a prestigious line-up of concerts from not only the ESO but also a gala performance by cellist Julian Lloyd-Webber.

Sebastian Parson, chairman of the ESO, said: "It is particularly appropriate that the Elgar Festival opening concert will be played by the English Symphony Orchestra, not only as Worcester is Elgar's home town, but that the Worcestershire-based ESO is synonymous with this great musician. We are proud and delighted to be part of it."

The concert will be led by the conductor Vernon Handley with Keith Rubach on bassoon. The programme will feature Elgar's Introduction and Allegro for Strings, Romance for Bassoon and the Wand of Youth Suite No 1.

There will also be a pre-concert talk by Humphrey Burton as well as a VIP reception in the cathedral's Chapter House.
