YOUNG ringers have been invited to a contest that will set bells pealing at the Cathedral and churches across Worcester.

The Worcester Cathedral ringers are encouraging competitors, friends and families to chime into the Ringing World’s National Youth Contest on Saturday, July 5.

Bishop John Inge said: “I’m delighted to be able to welcome young ringers to Worcester for this contest and festival of ringing.

“We have magnificent bells, both old and new, in our churches in Worcester city centre and it will be wonderful to hear them all ringing at different times during the day.”

The main competition will begin at Old St Martin’s Church in the Cornmarket between 10am and 4.30pm.

Non competitors will also be able to take part in the events.

Hand bell workshops will be held throughout the day by Tom Hinks in the Cathedral, with a Twelve Bell Masterclass available at All Saints between 11am and 1.30pm.

The class will feature half hour sessions for groups of up to 15 people allowing for as many ringers as possible to take part.

Additional bell ringing at All Saints will be available later in the afternoon.

Other bell sets available during the day include St Swithun’s Church, St John in Bedwardine Church, St Stephen's Church, Barbourne.

The Cathedral’s magnificent set of twelve bells will be open for the use of competitors between 2.30pm and 5pm run by the Cathedral's own young ringers.

Competitors will gather at College Hall from 5.45pm to hear the results followed by a pig roast and barbecue on College Green to end the day.
