THE only Worcester-based political activist to try and get into Brussels this year says he is "not disappointed" with the outcome - and insists his party will grow.

Carl Humphries, who lives in Ombersley Road, was the main city organiser for UKIP until last year but agreed to break away with former MEP Mike Nattrass and form a new pact.

The duo launched 'An Independence Party', which fielded seven candidates in the West Midlands region on Sunday and more across the country.

In Worcester 490 people voted for the party and 27,171 across the region, while 235,124 plumped for it nationally, but it wasn't enough.

Mr Humphries, a former city councillor and ex-leader of Worcester's Conservative group, said: "People have already rung me up saying 'are you disappointed', but we can' t feel like that.

"We've gone from a standing start to all of these votes - to have done that is phenomenal.

"All in all it was a good response, we can grow from here, this is only the start.

"Hopefully it will lead to David Cameron bringing forward an in/out referendum, but I don't think he will."

He said he was aiming to recruit more "foot soldiers" to try again next time.
