BAD weather left a not-for-profit furnishing store with a damaged door - but nearby businesses came to the rescue.

The front door at Second Chance Furnishing's warehouse unit, in Three Springs Trading Estate, Vincent Road, Worcester, needed to be replaced after it was battered by bad weather.

But, the social enterprise could not afford the work, and construction company Speller Metcalfe stepped in footing the £800 bill.

A spokesman for Second Chance Furnishing said: "We rely on the generosity of local people and businesses to support the good work that Second Chance Furnishings does, a big thank you to Speller Metcalfe for their support."

Small works director from the construction company, Bill Cave, organised the works which not only involved replacing the weather-damaged door, but also saw work on electrical sockets, hand heaters and a security light.

“The programme that Second Chance run is so important to the local community. Not only are they providing opportunities for those in long-term unemployment to get back to work, they are providing skills for life to their volunteers and we are proud to have been a part of it.” he said.

The support from Speller Metcalfe came as a result of previous contact through social media website Twitter. There was also support from Summit Electrical and DCS Plumbing.

Second Chance Furnishing accepts donations of good second hand furniture to re-sell to the public at reduced prices, with stock also being used in conjunction with local charity St Paul’s Hostel to help homeless people that are being resettled into their own accommodation.
