STAFF and pupils at a Worcester school have celebrated after inspectors said their school was good.

A recent Ofsted inspection found Stanley Road Primary School was good in all categories.

Inspectors said standards were rising because of better teaching and rigorous checks.

Headteacher Anne Potter said: "They were very fair. It was what we expected.

"We've been working really hard on raising the quality of teaching.

"It's consistently good across the school and now we are going to aim for outstanding."

The inspection found children generally started the Stanley Road school with skills below average for their age and were still below average in year 1.

However, attainment rose in 2013 and was in line with national averages in reading, writing and mathematics.

Pupils' overall achievement in key stage 2 had been improving for the last three years.

The quality of teaching was good and the Early Years Foundation Stage was praised.

Many of the staff were bilingual which helped settle in pupils who speak other languages.

The children were given good help to learn English so they could join in with lessons quickly.

Teachers knew their pupils well and management of their behaviour was excellent.

However, the teaching of phonics was not consistently good and although pupils' work was marked thoroughly and regularly, the impact of marking was varied.

Pupils behaved well and were considerate and kind and their parents felt they were safe and happy.

The senior leadership team was praised for having an accurate view of the school's strengths and weaknesses and a clear and ambitious vision for improvements.

However, the report found attendance at the school was too low even though it was improving slowly - and the school had made vigorous attempts to improve it.

Mrs Potter said attendance was just below 95 per cent but it was a difficult problem to overcome as 70 per cent of pupils had links abroad and often arrived and left midway through the year.

She said: "In our year 6s last year there were only 10 children who had been through the school from reception.

"We turn over 20 per cent of the school every year.

"We've worked really hard on this for years now."
