THE search is on for members of the public to check the welfare of those in custody.
West Mercia Police's Crime Commissioner says he particularly wants to recruit people from ethnic minorities and those aged 18 to 40.
They would help check on those in cells at Worcester Police Station in Castle Street, Worcester.
“Independent Custody Visitors have an essential and valued part to play in ensuring that all people in custody are treated impartially and with respect," said Barrie Sheldon, Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for West Mercia.
“Custody visitors are independent of the police and are given training and out of pocket expenses for all of the visits they make.
“I am keen to encourage people to give a little of their time to be involved in this very valuable scheme and to help maintain the force’s high standards.
“Some detainees may be young or vulnerable and it is exceptionally important to me to have measures in place to ensure they are treated properly.”
In an advert placed in your Worcester News this week, the Commisioner's Office said they particularly wanted to hear from Worcester residents who are part of minority ethnic communities, plus people aged 18 -40 "as they are currently under-represented".
