AFTER its most successful year to date, Upton in Bloom is setting its sights even higher for 2007.

In August, the town's entry in the Heart of England competition yielded another gold award, along with entry into the prestigious Britain in Bloom event for the very first time.

Although judging of the national competition does not take place until August, the hard work is already under way.

A picture by Hanley Castle High School pupil Jess Barnett, aged 14, has been selected to help publicise the 2007 bid.

The picture, which features Upton's famous Pepperpot, won second prize in the recent Heart of England in Bloom art competition.

Upton in Bloom member Jackie Surtees said it showed all the things Upton in Bloom was about.

"Jess was really pleased to have her picture chosen," she said. "Getting young people involved is a very big part of our ethos and this is a great example of that."

Mrs Surtees is looking forward to a busy, but exciting year for Upton-upon-Severn.

Bloom members will give a presentation to the town council in January detailing what areas need tidying up. They are are looking for grants and a major sponsor to help fund the Elgar-themed entry, which could cost £20,000.

"We'll be looking for as many people as possible to get involved," said Mrs Surtees.
