A PLAN to ask people to dig into their own pockets to save their town library has had an “encouraging” response.

The future of Upton Library is in doubt due to wide-ranging cutbacks at Worcestershire County Council.

Town councillors say they have been told the library needs to find annual savings of £25,000 to remain open.

They are championing a scheme that would see residents of the town and surrounding villages pay a 40p a month council tax surcharge to keep it from closing.

Upton Town Council has been consulting with its residents and neighbouring parish councils since before Christmas and Mayor Peter Webb said the response has been “encouraging”.

Further meetings are scheduled to take place on Monday with an update to the town council and further discussions at its meeting in the Memorial Hall, Old Street, at 7.30pm on Tuesday.
