WITH the festive season over for another year, people in Worcester are being reminded Christmas trees can only be recycled at two sites in the city.

Worcester City Council has previously run Christmas tree recycling services at the household waste reclamation centres in Bilford Road and Hallow Road as well as the car park of Homebase in Hylton Road and Blooms garden centre in Droitwich Road. This year the service is only being run from the Bilford Road and Hallow Road centres due to cutbacks, but people have been leaving their trees at the Hylton Road and Droitwich Road sites anyway. A council spokesman said taxpayers’ money would now have to be spent removing the trees.“It will get done but its extra resources we will have to use,” he said.

“We really urge people not to drop them there and instead take them to the Bilford Road and Hallow Road sites.”

The council was unable to say how much it cost to run the recycling service at Hylton Road and Blooms or therefore how much it was saving as a result of cancelling the service. The Bilford Road site is open from 8am until 6pm Monday to Saturday and 10am until 4pm on Sundays, while the Hallow Road site is open from 8am until 4pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 12.30pm on Sundays.

All trees are taken to a composting facility at Throckmorton, near Pershore, where they are shredded and composted before being turned into soil conditioner. The scheme will end on Sunday.
