A HOTEL in a 19th-century building in the conservation area in Great Malvern could be converted into an apartment block if planners give the go-ahead.
The owners of Walmer Lodge Hotel in Abbey Road have applied to Malvern Hills District Council to convert it into nine apartments and put up an additional building on land at the rear for a further two homes.
The matter is due to be discussed at a meeting of a district council planning meeting at 7pm tonight.
Last November, the council refused permission for the construction of a new building in the grounds for six apartments occupied by hotel guests.
The building has three storeys when viewed from Abbey Road, increasing to five storeys at the rear due to a difference in ground levels.
Planners feel the principle of residential development on the site is acceptable and would not have an adverse impact upon the character of the conservation area.
They also say the design and scale is in keeping with the area and adequate off-road parking has been provided.
They are recommending the scheme is granted approval, subject to the applicants entering a legal agreement to help pay for schools and open space in the area.
