A LANDMARK Worcester building is being given a new lease of life thanks to a college expansion.
The 60s-style brick and glass block in Dolday, once the headquarters of Countrywide Farmers and latterly the Russell and Dorrell furniture store, is being given a revamp by Worcester College of Technology.
Next to the Hive, the project is a major expansion for the college with the building being completely remodelled by Malvern-based contractor Speller Metcalfe to provide a range of facilities including a hair and beauty training centre, commercial salon, IT rooms and a fashion studio, as well as an art and design, multi-media suite.
Vice principal Nicki Williams said the college was proud to be improving such an iconic site in the city.
“The college is extremely proud to restore such an iconic building in the heart of Worcester,” she said.
“The project will combine modern facilities while recognising and maintaining the history of the building and its surrounding area. We are fortunate to work with a building contractor who recognises the importance of providing work experience and look forward to the wide range of opportunities that this will present our students in the coming months.”
Speller Metcalfe has a long history of working on education facilities – particularly in Worcestershire – and will be working closely with the college and the local community.
Alongside the build, the contractor and college aim to open an on-site salon and catering facilities for students to put their skills into practise while learning how to run a real-life business.
The project will also provide work experience and apprenticeship opportunities such as bricklaying, electrical and plumbing.
