THE man who died in a two-car crash outside Sixways stadium in Worcester on Saturday has been named.
David Smith, of Chippenham in Wiltshire, was killed after a black Jaguar collided with the black Volkswagen Golf he was driving on the A4538, Pershore Lane, at about 2.15pm.
The 59-year-old was trapped in his car and, although ambulance crews attempted to treat him, he went into cardiac arrest and died at the scene.
The driver of the Jaguar – also a 59-year-old man – suffered fractures to his ankles as well as injuries to his hip, wrist and pelvis, and was given pain relief before being cut free from the car.
He was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
Witnesses said the Jaguar was seen driving past the David Lloyd leisure centre towards junction six of the M5 moments before the crash and police are appealing for any other witnesses to come forward.
A West Mercia Police spokesman said: “We are very keen to hear from anyone who saw this collision or anyone who may have seen either of the vehicles involved in the moments that preceded it.
“A number of people have come forward but clearly the more witnesses we can speak to the better.”
The Worcester Warriors squad was playing away in Oyonnax, France, on Saturday, although the amateur team Worcester Wanderers was at the stadium at the time of the crash.
A cycling event arranged by Worcester Jaguar dealership Listers was being held at the stadium during the day, but no one from the company was available for comment.
The road was closed in both directions for several hours, causing congestion at the busy Sixways roundabout.
Anyone with any information can call police on 101, quoting incident number 365S 121013.
