A PENSIONER who cares for her son has said a Malvern housing association needs to “pull their socks up” after the pair were unable to be reunited in their home.

Mavis Tudge, aged 82, looks after her son Nigel, 51, who has cerebral palsy, at her home in Steamer Point, Malvern, which is managed by Festival Housing.

When Mrs Tudge had a heart attack on September 5 she was rushed to hospital while her son was taken into respite care.

On the same day, a water tank in the roof of the house burst through the ceiling, flooding it and making it uninhabitable.

Now, more than a month on, Mrs Tudge, who is well enough to return home and care for Nigel again, cannot go into her house as repairs have yet to be completed.

But Festival Housing says the pair will be reunited at their home within four weeks after being contacted by your Malvern Gazette.

“I feel a lot better now. I just want to get my lad,” said Mrs Tudge, who is currently staying in Howbury House in Malvern.

“He is the main thing. I miss him a lot. We are normally always together. We are a team.

“He is 51 and very sensible but he can’t communicate with people that well, but we get by all right together.

“They need to pull their socks up.”

The house, which has been wrecked by the flood, has been visited by Festival Housing but Mrs Tudge’s granddaughter, Stephanie Yapp, said they have been passed from pillar to post trying to sort out the situation.

She said: “The heart attack and flooding happened on September 5 and Festival were made aware of it and they said they would deal with it.

“She [Mrs Tudge] has gone through a lot in four weeks. But then we were told they weren’t ready. The house is just a disaster.

“Festival went into the house for a few hours on Thursday but no one has been since.

“My biggest issue is why haven’t they done the work in the house?”

A spokesman for Festival Housing said Mrs Tudge would be able to return home within four weeks and it would be redecorated had have a new bathroom fitted.

They said: “We appreciate Mrs. Tudge has been through a difficult time. In response to this Festival has pulled out all of the stops to make sure the property is repaired more quickly then normal.

"We have had our insurance company involved which has taken some time to decide on the work to be completed.

"However the outcome will be that within 4 weeks Mrs Tudge can return to her property with many rooms having been redecorated and a brand new bathroom will have been installed.

"We have also endeavoured to find Mrs. Tudge alternative accommodation while the work is carried out but she has chosen to turn down our initial offer.

"We are now in the process of looking for alternative accommodation more suited to her needs. Occasions like these are a reminder to all our residents to take out contents insurance.”
