YOUNG Daniel Heavens has proved he can keep a cool head in an emergency.
The eight-year-old Pitmaston Primary School pupil went to his mum's rescue when she was suddenly taken ill on Monday, December 4.
Forty-three-year-old Helen Heavens, of Sedge Close, St John's, was suffering from bronchitis and struggling to breathe. Daniel saw his mum panicking but stayed clam and called an ambulance. "I couldn't breathe," said Mrs Heavens, "I was really panicking but he just said, Don't panic mum' and he went and rang an ambulance. I didn't even ask him to.
"Daniel is just one of those kids that nobody ever praises, but he was absolutely brilliant and I want him to know how proud I am."
Mrs Heavens had to stay in hospital overnight but is now recovering at home.
Daphne Lewis, spokesman for West Mercia Ambulance Service, said: "It is always encouraging to find young children who are brave enough to take control of a situation such as this and act with so much calm and common sense.
"Daniel's actions clearly averted what could have been a potentially serious outcome for his mum."
