AN ambulance driver who was called to the scene of the horror smash on Sunday has spoken of his sadness for the families of the teenagers.

Dug Holloway, divisional manager for the Worcester Area Ambulance service, was one of the first people to witness the carnage, along with police and fire crews who replied to the 999 call.

"It was one of the worst accidents I have ever attended. Obviously it was sad because of the dead bodies - but the way the car had broken up upon impact was bad too.

"And it was made even more horrific that it was young lives lost."

He went onto explain how members of the emergency services were all given counselling and a long de-briefing after the event to help them deal with what had happened that evening.

"The ambulance crews were quite down-hearted about it, mainly because of the the time of year. It is quite sad at this time with Christmas so near.

"We all felt for the families of these people. We all feel quite low."

Speaking of their arrival at the scene, shortly after 9.30pm, Mr Holloway said: "When we arrived we found a blue car had gone off the road and had hit a tree. There were three bodies in the vehicle and one by the side of it. The three had no life signs but the one which was found by the side of it had some signs of life. They were rushed to hospital."

The male passenger, who was taken to Worcestershire Royal hospital, died shortly afterwards.

Although the road was closed, a number of people had gathered at the scene, including a nurse on her way to a night shift at Worcester hospital.

Mr Holloway added: "It was quite an horrific crash and to lose four people like that. It just doesn't seem right."
