THE sound of clinking coffee cups were heard across Worcestershire as people got together for the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

People held events across the county yesterday to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, the charity’s biggest fund-raising event.

This year it is hoped nearly £150,000 will be raised with more than 1,200 coffee mornings registered in the county.

Colin Jackson and former Strictly Come Dancing partner Erin Boag added some sparkle to the coffee morning at npower, Worcester. The twinkle-toed pair taught workers some dance moves before judging the cake competition.

Staff at technology company Postcode Anywhere, Basin Road, Worcester, carried out their own version of the Great British Bake Off to raise £300.

Guy Mucklow, chief executive for Postcode Anywhere said: “We are delighted to take part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and donate the much-needed funds.”

About 40 people turned out for the coffee morning held in the parent and toddler group session at Lyppard Grange Community Centre, Warndon Villages, Worcester.

Visitors enjoyed home-made cakes from some of the mums and the staff and raised £77.

Jenny Fuller, senior centre assistant, said: “It was fantastic. People from local shops came in and they bought cakes. It was really successful.”

Court House Nursing Home, Barnards Green, Malvern, also held a coffee morning.

Year 10 and 11 students at Christopher Whitehead Language College, Worcester, served up cream teas to members of staff during their lunch break at their event.

Internationally renowned author and illustrator Jackie Morris dropped in for coffee and cakes at the coffee morning held at Blue-ginger gallery and cafe in Cradley, near Malvern.

She signed some of her children’s books at the event, which raised £100.

Councillor Pat Agar, Mayor of Worcester, also hosted the annual event at the Guildhall.

Hilary Al Rasheed, area fund-raising manager for Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire, said: “People have been doing a fantastic job. The sense of fun and enthusiasm for this event is really incredible.

“The money raised helps the charity’s vital services from specialist nurses and doctors to help and advice to those who experience financial difficulty.

“Our main aim is making sure no one is going through cancer alone.”
