A WISTFUL shot of a guitarist lost in the art of performance has rocked its way to the top.

The third Worcester Music Festival photography competition was won by Duncan Graves for his image of Vinnie Liotta playing with progressive rock band Da Vinci at Monroes Cellar Bar, Foregate Street, Worcester.

Mr Graves was presented with a £100 voucher for Wilkinson Cameras at the Worcester Arts Workshop, Sansome Street.

A record 750 photos were entered from this year’s celebration of original music, which ran from Friday, August 30, to Sunday, September 1, in 35 venues across the city.

One of this year’s judges, Joe Singh, said: “It really was a stand-out entry above the rest. “The composition and crop is spot on, we can see the guitarist’s face clearly and the lighting and fall off is brilliant, helped in part because he is turned away from the light source. The fact that there is lots of contrast and a dark background with no distractions also really makes this photograph pop. “Big congratulations to Duncan, who I believe is going to buy a new camera lens with his prize.”

Second prize went to Roy Jenks for his black and white shot of Howard Kenny from the Broken Oak Duet performing at Rise Records in CrownGate Shopping Centre.

Pete Brothwell took third place with his image of James Willis from Das Sexy Clap playing at the Marr’s Bar. The competition was also judged by photographers Mark Hoy and Steve Johnston.

The top 25 photographs will be on display at the Worcester Arts Workshop, Sansome Street, until Saturday, September 28.
