GILES Potter has managed to make it into X Factor boot camp despite his performance being labelled a "car crash" by judge Gary Barlow.

The 16-year-old was given advice backstage by the Take That star after forgetting the words to Jackie Wilson's Reet Petite during the arena audition shown tonight.

After all four judges decided to put him through, Gary left the stage to tell Giles, from Norton: "I want you to go really far in this that's why I'm being tough on you.

"You've got to wake up. What most people have when they walk out there is 90 per cent voice ten per cent charisma.

"At the moment you've got too much charisma. You need to get the vocals up to that level."

It was a confident start to the audition for the teen who was shown telling another contestant that he had nothing to be nervous about.

Gary and Nicole Scherzinger were visibly pleased to see Giles as he made it on to the stage and as the song began he got the audience clapping along.

The strong start gave way to nerves and the former Pershore High student sang the wrong verse and, after apologising, told the audience: "We'll just go with it."

He began to sing again when Gary lifted his arm to call an end to the audition.

Giles told the judges he was really nervous because there was a big crowd.

Gary told him: "That was a car crash. You didn't know what you were doing.

"You did the wrong verse to the wrong chorus.

"You've got to take this more seriously. You've got it in there"

Sharon Osbourne told Giles: "You have really got to work on your vocals but you are a natural entertainer and I'm going to say yes."

Nicole told him she was going to give him a chance while Louis Walsh also agreed to put him through to boot camp.

Giles had previously sailed through the room audition round with his version of chart hit Price Tag by Jessie J.

After the show aired, he tweeted his fans: "Guys I know I messed up in this world everyone does its the way it goes but all I can say is bring on boot camp love you guys."

The XFactor returns at 8.20pm on Saturday and 7.30pm on Sunday.
