A DETERMINED student conquered the highest mountain in Africa to raise money to help street children.

Charlotte Webber, aged 19, from Upton, rose to new heights as she made the daunting 5,900metre ascent up Mount Kilimanjaro.

She has raised more than £2,000 for the Hope for Children charity, which is working with street children in Tanzania to re-home them or re-unite them with their families.

Miss Webber, who is studying for a degree in animal science, travelled to Tanzania with about 30 fellow students from Nottingham University.

Their attempt on Kilimanjaro took five gruelling days – four scaling up the daunting peak and one to get back down again after reaching the summit.

Miss Webber described the climb as “one of the most challenging things I have ever done”.

During their trip they visited Hope for Children to see how building work is progressing on a permanent base that will allow it to use the money it currently spends on rent to help more children.

It is hoped this will be finished in September next year and Miss Webber said seeing the charity’s work in action and visiting the 50 children under its care was “very rewarding”.
