A CARE worker who prides herself on bringing greater respect to care for the vulnerable has celebrated 30 years supporting people with mental health and learning disabilities.

Alexis McConnell, who works at Stuart House, London Road, Worcester, received a visit from Jeremy Nixey, chief executive of Shaw healthcare, to thank her for three decades of dedication. Mr Nixey presented her with a large bouquet of flowers and a certificate.

Mrs McConnell, who used to work at Powick Hospital, near Worcester, said the care provided had changed dramatically from the old militaristic style to a modern way which is based around the needs of the individual.

Mr Nixey said: “It’s an absolute pleasure to be here today and meet Alexis who has told me that she was shocked by the lack of respect towards patients which she couldn’t help seeing when she first started working in the large NHS psychiatric hospitals 30 years ago.

“I know she now considers herself privileged to have played a part in changing the way that those with mental health or learning difficulties are now being cared for and respected by those entrusted with their care.”

Mrs McConnell, aged 56, of the Arboretum, Worcester, has no immediate plans to stop working.

She said: “I love my job. I get great satisfaction supporting people and enabling them to live their lives as independently as possible and to fulfil their potential.”

Shaw healthcare operates a number of specialist services and community services in and around Worcester aimed at supporting people living with mental health and or learning disability.
