A DEDICATED community fund-raiser who spent a lifetime helping others has made one last contribution to his favourite cause.

Reg Box, who died last month aged 95, raised well over £100,000 for the Midlands Air Ambulance with a packed schedule of entertaining at care homes and organising bingo evenings and fund-raising events.

Mr Box, of Brook Farm Drive, in Malvern, was busy right up until his final weeks and had amassed another £4,200 for the charity that he never had the chance to hand over.

Mr Box’s son Nigel handed over the money on his father’s behalf during the annual Midlands Air Ambulance open day held at its base at Strensham Services, near Worcester.

Mr Box described the donation as “Reg’s final legacy” and said it brought the grand total his father raised for the charity to almost £130,000 in just 17 years.

As well as being known for his charity work, Mr Box was a long-standing supporter of Malvern Town Football Club, serving as president for a number of years.

Because of his strong community connections Mr Box now expects his father’s fund-raising work to live on. He said he has already been inundated with requests from people wanting to fund-raise in his name.

“One request was from ex-footballers and another from the people who play bingo at Malvern Town Football Club on a Sunday night,” he said.

“There will also be a good amount from the donations made at the crematorium and to Holland Funeral Services.”

The Midlands Air Ambulance helicopter performed a flypast in honour of Mr Box before his funeral at Worcester Crematorium.

Fund-raising manager Anne Newell said: “We will always be grateful to him and he will be sadly missed.”
