A GROUP of guitarists strummed their way into the record books by forming part of Britain’s biggest ever band.

The Guinness World Record saw Worcester bands well represented as 2,267 musicians descended on Lyme Regis beach to play Buddy Holly’s classic Rave On.

Pete Unwin and Clive Kennard of the Cowley Cowboys, Derek Ridge and Pete Rutherford of the Miffs, and Dave Pygott of the Worcestershire Ukulele Orchestra, braved the temperamental end-of- summer weather to take part in the effort, which took place at 4.45pm on Saturday – what would have been Holly’s 77th birthday.

Guitars on the Beach was the idea of celebrity chef Mark Hix and Pete Unwin said he was delighted to have taken part.

“It just seemed a very British and eccentric thing to do, plus it was an excuse for the last weekend of the summer to be spent on a beach in Dorset,” he said.

“Being record breakers won’t change us and we will still be playing local gigs, including the launch of the Worcester Rocks CD at the Velvet Lounge on Saturday, September 27, featuring the Cowley Cowboys and the Miffs.”
