A FUN-LOVING couple say there has never been a dull moment as they celebrate 50 happy years together today after one half beat cancer to toast the milestone.

Mick Prodger, aged 75, and Maureen “Mo” Prodger, 70, of Springfield Close, Worcester, will today mark their golden anniversary with a party. They married on September 7, 1963, at St Barnabas Church, off Rainbow Hill, Worcester.

Mr Prodger, who was a painter and decorator before working for Royal Mail for 30 years, met his bride-to-be on a trip organised by the Punch Bowl in Ronkswood, Worcester, and another pub.

He said: “I thought, ‘I like the look of her’ and asked her to a dance at a pub called the Robin Hood. We got on well.”

However, things were not always plain sailing. He said: “There have been a few ups and downs, but we’re just content with one another. Marriages don’t seem to last long nowadays. I’m proud that we’ve got this far.”

Mr Prodger overcame non-Hodgkins lymphoma six years ago and says he has had no problems since.

Mrs Prodger, whose maiden name is Clarke, said: “What I liked about him was his personality. He’s never down in the dumps. He’s always joking. Even when he had cancer he wasn’t miserable. He also has nice eyes.

“He would give you his last penny and he would do anything for me and I would do anything for him and that has kept our marriage going.

“We both like the social life and we’re outgoing people.”

The golden couple are set for a celebratory party at the Ewe and Lamb in Hanbury Road, Bromsgrove, followed by a buffet party for family, neighbours and friends tomorrow. Then, on Thursday, they will set off for a holiday in Jersey.

The couple have a shared interest in gardening and enjoy caravan holidays.

The couple have two sons, Adrian, 49, and Darren, 47, and three grandchildren.
