A SURGEON has set an inspiring example by making more than 75 potentially life-saving blood donations over the last 40 years.

Phil Earl, a specialist facial surgeon at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, made his first donation when he was 18 and has gone on to provide more than 35 litres of blood over the last four decades – helping to save as many as 200 lives.

His dedication was recognised by NHS Blood and Transplant when he was one of 43 donors presented with a special crystal award during a ceremony at Malvern’s Abbey Hotel.

Mr Earl, of Lark Hill, Worcester, said: “My parents were devoted blood donors and took me to make my first donation when I was 18. It made sense to carry on doing something amazing by giving blood.

“Receiving this award is just more motivation for me to reach 100 donations.

“My daughter Charlotte has been so inspired by this achievement that she decided to register as a donor herself and that is the best reward.

“Knowing that I can inspire someone to save lives makes this even more worth it.”

Anyone aged between 17 and 65, who weighs more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and is in general good health could potentially become a blood donor.

“I would love to encourage others to donate blood, it’s not difficult, said Mr Earl. “The amount of blood taken each time is so small your body doesn’t notice it.”

Zeeshan Asghar, partnership development manager at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “It’s wonderful that Mr Earl has dedicated himself to giving blood over so many years and performing such a life-saving role.”
