THESE new pictures show just how quickly a new state-of-the-art radiotherapy unit is taking shape at Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester.

With the doors of the new £22.5 million unit just over a year away from opening, the steel skeleton of the new building has started to tower over the building site.

Construction is reported to be going well and on schedule, with concrete currently being poured in for treatment bunkers and work underway to create the linkway between the new centre and the main hospital building. Hospital users are being warned that there will be some disruption to the site and car parks during the early part of September.

Steve Lloyd, interim director of estates, said: “We are doing everything we can to minimise disruption for patients and visitors.

“We will ensure that traffic flow is maintained at all times but there will probably be some congestion. We will aim to keep this to a minimum and will continue to monitor the situation.”

The unit will provide treatment for Worcestershire’s cancer patients and means they will no longer face long journeys for their care. It is estimated it will save patients about one million miles of travel every year.
