A DRINK-driver drove his car into a cornfield – and when police arrived at the scene they also found him with cannabis.

Simon Tandy, aged 28, of Marlbank Road, Welland, near Malvern, admitted driving with excess alcohol and possession of cannabis when he appeared before magistrates in Worcester following the incident at about 1.20am on Saturday, August 17.

Sarah Stock, prosecuting, said: “Police received calls from members of the public reporting that a car had left the road and been driven into a cornfield and the car was being driven around the field, trying to get out.” When police arrived they heard voices in the field and found two males standing next to the car, one of whom was Tandy.

Tandy admitted it was his car and he had been driving it when it left the road. He said he had been driving along Lower Howsell Road but a car travelling in the opposite direction caused him to move over and he had entered the field. Officers could smell alcohol on his breath and he admitted he had drunk two pints that night.

A roadside breath test proved positive and he was arrested. When handcuffing him officers could smell cannabis and Tandy produced a clear bag of cannabis from his trouser pocket.

Mrs Stock said: “During the journey he said ‘I was stupid, I had a couple of drinks and I drove. I deserve what I get’. He repeated that numerous times to the officer in the car.”

The lower reading at the police station was 59mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, above the legal limit of 35mcg. The cannabis was identified as having a value of £5.

Tandy, who represented himself, said: “The cannabis is solely for personal use. As to the driving offence, it’s my own fault. I did something I shouldn’t have done. I could possibly lose my job as a trainee structural engineer.”

Magistrates banned him from driving for 12 months, fined him £240 and ordered him to pay a victim surcharge of £24 and costs of £85. He was given the chance to complete the Telford Course which, if completed successfully by March 30 next year, will reduce the length of his ban by 12 weeks. He was given a conditional discharge for possession of cannabis.
