HOLIDAYMAKERS in Worcestershire are undaunted by the violent clashes in Egypt, travel agents have said.

Agents in the county have told your Worcester News trips to the country have been going ahead despite unrest over the past week, and very few have enquired about cancelling their plans.

Although the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has advised people to stay away from Cairo, Alexandria and Luxor, the popular Red Sea resorts have been deemed safe and national papers have reported that many people have been refused refunds for trips to the country. Eight hundred people have died there in the past week in violent clashes between supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi and the interim military government.

Lee Harrison of independent travel agents Malvern World Travel said none of his customers had so far cancelled their planned trips.

“Obviously we adhere very closely to Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice,” he said. “Although some other countries have changed their guidelines the UK hasn’t done that yet so it’s all going ahead as normal.”

He said holidaymakers in the Red Sea area had reported it was business as usual in the resorts.

“We had some people come back from Sharm el-Sheikh who have booked to go back again in October,” he said.

“Obviously if things change between now and then people should contact their travel agent or holiday provider and ask about moving the booking or possibly a refund.”

The US, French, Russian, German, Swedish, Swiss and Belgian governments have all advised people to avoid the country and Thailand is preparing to evacuate its citizens but the British government has so far not followed suit.

A spokesman from Malvern travel agents Easy Travel said the business had received only one enquiry about cancelling a trip.

“We had one woman phone up last week asking about cancelling, saying she was insured but we had to tell her it didn’t cover this,” he said.

“Until the Foreign Office advises it’s not safe to go there you can’t just decide not to go and get your money back.

“It’s not a particularly popular holiday spot at this time of year anyway – it’s more of a winter destination.”
