ENTREPRENEUR Malcolm Victory gave his washing line invention a spin on BBC’s hit show Dragons’ Den and was quickly in a spin himself.
Mr Victory whose Rotaire, a cover for rotary washing lines, has won awards, said it was a daunting prospect facing the dragons in the programme to be screened on Sunday. He said his knees turned to jelly as he entered the studio to pitch his product for investment from the multi-millionaire dragons on the show.
In this series, the panel is composed of Duncan Bannatyne, Kelly Hoppen, Deborah Meaden, Piers Linney and Peter Jones.
He said: “I’ve never been in the same room as that much money in my life. When I walked on to the set it was exactly as you see it on the TV, the dragons ranged across in front of you.” He showed them a video and gave a two-minute presentation on the Rotaire, after which he had a chance to talk to them more informally about his product.
Mr Victory, who lives in Malvern Wells, said the idea came to him while he was working with a woman who regularly got caught out by the rain while at work.
“Like so many, she needed to put the washing out before going to work, only to return to a ruined load of laundry,” he said.
The Rotaire has already sold more than 5,000 units and has very good customer satisfaction feedback, selling as far afield as New Zealand and Indonesia.
But as for the Dragons’ Den outcome, only he knows until the “I’m out…or in…” verdict is delivered on Sunday, and he’s not telling. The programme will be screened on BBC 2 at 8pm.
