SPECTACULAR views, spectacular Shakespeare and ‘something different’ are among the attractions on offer at the Worcester Festival today.

As events continue for the festival, which runs until Bank Holiday Monday, August 26, visitors can savour arts, culture and entertainment.

At the Swan Theatre, the Festival Players will be performing the classic Shakespeare comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, starting at 7.30pm.

A spokesman said the performance would feature summer fun for the whole family.

“Shakespeare’s wonderful fantasy comedy has always been a firm family favourite,” he said.

“As in the Bard’s day, the Festival Players will be performing with an all-male company of skilled professional actors, and invite you to share in the colour, poetry and magical mayhem.”

Elsewhere today, visitors to Worcester Cathedral get a rare opportunity to climb the 235 steps of the cathedral tower to savour spectacular views across the city and beyond.

The tower will be open between 11am and last entry is at 4.30pm, with tickets costing £4, or £2 for school-age children.

Meanwhile, in the cathedral’s West Cloister, Something Different For Young People will offer exactly that, in the form of a mediaeval monastery-inspired workshop.

Run by members of the cathedral’s education team, children can take part in copying, illuminating and drawing at the workshop, which is free and held on a drop-in basis.

And for those who fancy something a bit more hands-on in Bell Square at the CrownGate shopping centre, nature will be the inspiration for a workshop open to crafty creatives of all ages.

Visual Attic will run the attraction, which is free, and runs from 11am until 3pm.

For Worcester residents who pay council tax in the city, the Commandery in Sidbury will be hosting a special event called The Enchanted Commandery between 11am and 4pm.

A spokesman for the event said: “Enrol at the Enchanted School and learn how to be a fairy, a warrior, or a sprite through craft activities and trails.

“Themes include legends and quests, fairies and sprites, damsels and dragons and combat and magic.”

Craft activities cost £1 and normal admission prices apply for those not living in the city.
