YOUNGSTERS from Acorns Children’s Hospice in Wor-cester enjoyed a pleasant afternoon cruise on the river Avon.

The trip on the Spirit of Freedom, part of the Avon Leisure Cruises, took place last Wednesday but almost didn’t at all when thieves broke into the boat overnight on Saturday, August 3, and damaged the vessel.

Captain Dave Smith was determined to get the boat in tip top condition in time for the visit from the children who have life-limited and life-threatened conditions and attend Acorns Children’s Hospice in Bath Road, Worcester.

He said: “It’s the least we could do for the hospice. We’ve been running these trips for the last seven years. The kids really enjoy it and so do we. The Spirit of Freedom has been specially adapted to include two hydraulic lifts giving easy access to disabled passengers.”

During the trip through Evesham the children travelled to Evesham Lock, then on to Hampton Ferry, before returning to the boat’s usual mooring alongside Workman Gardens.

The cruise was further supported by Vale Vintage Cars which had parked close to the quayside giving everyone chance to look around three vintage vehicles before setting sail.

Also on board were Evesham’s Mayor and Mayoress, Mark and Emma Goodge, and Worcester consultant orthopaedic surgeon Nadim Aslam, who helped organise and sponsor the event. Debra Clark, of Acorns Children’s Hospice, said: “As usual Avon Leisure Cruises organised such a wonderful river trip and the kids were so excited. Dave and his crew were generous in every way.”

Mr Aslam is a knee and sports injury specialist and works with Worcester Warriors rugby club which is on the list of Acorns’ partners. Other partners include Aston Villa Football Club and Birmingham Airport.
