A MUSEUM at a historic infirmary in the centre of Worcester is celebrating its first birthday with three days of events as part of the Worcester Festival.

The Birthdays and Memories exhibition at the infirmary, at the University of Worcester’s city campus, will run until tomorrow and will see visitors get a peek into the history of health care in the city. The event will involve midwifery skills past and present demonstrated by students from the university along with members of the Worcestershire League of Nurses.

Visitors to the former infirmary – one of the oldest in the country – will also be able to see a range of artefacts including feeding bottles and breast pumps and take part in tours around the building, which reopened as a museum last year. The museum’s learning and access officer Carol Bowsher said the events would be “fun for all the family”.

“We have our ever-popular behind-the-scenes historical guided hospital tours, and visitors can try their hand at midwifery skills such as nappy changing – the traditional way,” she said.

“There will also be a great range of craft activities for our younger visitors, including making birthing identity bracelets and family trees.”

Entry to the museum is free, with a small charge for craft activities.

Other events taking place tomorrow as part of this year’s 10th annual festival include a musical theatre dance workshop for ages 12-18 at the Swan Theatre, a behind-the-scenes tour of the cathedral and a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at The Commandery.

Regular events also running throughout the day include tours of the cathedral, Secret Egypt and A Pint in the Museum exhibitions at Worcester Museum and Art Gallery and an icon and flower exhibition at Old St Martin’s Church on the Cornmarket.
