BUDDING gardeners who would like to try their hand at growing their own fruit and vegetables are being urged to take part in a new project.
Festival Housing, one of the largest landlords in Droitwich, is looking for tenants to help cultivate a piece of land in Charles Henry Road.
Paul Edwards, Festival’s local community officer, hopes the initiative will encourage people to grow produce, learn new skills and make new friends.
“The Charles Henry Road plot was a disused piece of ground which had become very overgrown and was an eyesore,” said Mr Edwards.
“In a previous life it had been an old garden with fruit trees, but had been neglected for more than 20 years and the hedges had grown to over 12ft tall.
“This is an opportunity for us to restore it to its former glory.”
Mr Edwards said that this was a continuation of a successful scheme launched last year in Droitwich called Lawley’s Land.
“The pilot scheme last year really brought residents together and enhanced the community," he said.
"People will have the opportunity to grow produce and so reduce their food bills, as well as work with us on one day a week to learn more about horticulture.
“This may lead to further training or volunteer opportunities and provide them with transferable skills."
Lisa Peters, who took part last year and is helping with the Charles Henry Road project, said: “It is really good fun – a great way to meet new people, get fit and grow some fruit and vegetables.”
Festival Housing is asking any of its tenants who are interested in the project to contact Mr Edwards on 01905 823148.
