THERE will be fun for all the family in Droitwich over the May Day weekend.
The annual St Richard’s Festival will run alongside the town’s Classic and Vintage Car Rally and boating festival from tomorrow to Monday.
There will be a host of mediaeval activities and entertainment along with street markets and a large display of classic and vintage cars.
Canal boats will be on display for much of the weekend along with a mediaeval encampment, static engines, community and craft stalls and boat trips on the Pamela May.
On Saturday, the Plantagenet Mediaeval Society will be putting on a display in Vines Park featuring squire training, musicians, dancing and armour demonstrations.
Visitors can also enjoy more than 100 classic and vintage cars which will be parked around the town centre, including a 1922 Willys Overland, a 1924 Rolls Royce and a 1934 Daimler.
The car rally raises funds for Midlands Air Ambulance and will be joined by an example of a helicopter used by the service.
Other attractions include ferret racing, the mayor’s flotilla of historic boats – which will travel along the canal at midday carrying local mayors and civic guests – and a duck race.
Visitors can also enjoy a craft and farmers’ market in Victoria Square, Morris dancing and an art exhibition in St Andrew’s Church by members of the Droitwich Arts Network.
On Sunday, there will be a cycle festival in Vines Park and activities to entertain children the following day.
Janet Yates, Droitwich area partnership manager at Wychavon District Council, said: “The addition of a boating festival and new entertainment and attractions is a real boost for the event and it means we can now run it over the whole of the bank holiday weekend.
“Events are important for attracting visitors to the town and St Richard’s Festival is the first in a busy summer events programme.”
