A PENSIONER hopes to prove that age is no barrier when he completes a gruelling walk to raise cash for a hospice for a fifth time.
Grandfather David Hawkins, of Broadlands Drive, Malvern, will walk 38 miles to raise money for St Michael’s Hospice in Hereford as part of the Just Walk event on Saturday, May 11. The walk starts from the Goodwood Racecourse in Sussex and took him 13 hours to complete last year.
The former Malvern Hills district councillor said: “This will be the fifth year I have done it. I would like to try and raise more than £750. I know a number of people who have been to the hospice and everybody speaks very highly of it.”
The 77-year-old also feels connected to the hospice through his daughter Becki Ansfield, who works there as a nurse, and through his wife Ann who works in the St Michael’s Hospice shop in Church Street, Malvern.
“There is a real family involvement. The hospice is intending to carry out a large expansion scheme of its facilities providing additional beds which are so in demand. The raising of a considerable sum is imperative,” he said.
