PUPILS at Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College in Worcester had an out of this world experience when they recreated the sky at night as part of National Science and Engineering Week Youngsters built their very own 10ft planetarium from recycled cardboard boxes, a security mirror and a projector to display the images inside the dome.
Michael Clee, science laboratory technician at the school, said: “How can you teach students about the night sky when you don’t have access to it in the day?
Having your own planetarium allows you to overcome this problem, and allows students to immerse themselves in the atmosphere which is unavailable in an ordinary classroom.”
Using the computer programme Stellarium, real time images of the night sky were projected on the surface of the planetarium, along with a video telling a story about the universe, and images from the Hubble Space Telescope.
Principal Sean Devlin said: “It will provide a unique and memorable experience for the students which will enhance learning about space. The students have enjoyed the planetarium experience.”
