A YOUNG cycling team rode 50 miles for charity as pedal power pumped more funds into a life-saving breast care unit in Worcester.

Hugo Charny, aged 12, of St George’s Square, Barbourne, Worcester, and friends, twins George and Tom Hale, 12, and their younger brother Ben, nine, of Honeybourne, all completed the tough ride.

They set off from the Haven in Hereford, a breast cancer support centre, to ride to the site of the breast unit at 220 Newtown Road in Worcester, near Worcestershire Royal Hospital, raising more than £1,000 for the Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign.

The boys were accompanied by their dads, Mark Charny and Chris Hale.

Hugo’s mum Fiona Charny is chairman of the Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign. She said: “I’m very proud of them for suggesting it, organising it then going out and doing it.”

Pedal power is proving a big boost for the campaign with the Worcester Brest Challenge taking place between Saturday, June 1, and Saturday, June 29.

The challenge is to cover the 240 miles between Worcester and Brest in Brittany, north west France.

The unit seeks to create a one-stop shop for breast care patients, allowing clinics to take place under one roof.

The campaign to raise the cash has been supported by your Worcester News since it was launched on October 1, 2009, and has raised more than half the £1.8 million needed to make the breast unit a reality.
