HUNDREDS of Scouts marched through Worcester city centre yesterday afternoon to mark St George’s Day.

The patriotic parade assembled in Angel Place at about 1.15pm, with Scouts of all ages proudly representing all the groups within the Worcester district.

The Scouts were accompanied by parents and relatives, who lined the streets as the parade formed.

Although the weather was more overcast than Saturday’s glorious sunshine, it stayed dry for the entire parade.

Led by the drummers of the Fifth Worcester Sea Scouts, the Scouts marched up Broad Street, turned into High Street, and headed past the Guildhall towards Worcester Cathedral.

Standard bearers carried the District Queen’s Colours, the Cross of St George and the emblems of the participating units.

Police stopped traffic as the parade made its way on to the square in front of the cathedral where the Scouts assembled at the north door, ahead of the service. As the Scout groups arrived, each standard bearer took up position alongside the entrance.

After the service, which was hosted this year by the Second Worcester Scouts, based at St John’s, Worcester, the parade reformed on College Green outside the cathedral and marched back down the High Street to the Guildhall, where the salute was taken. It then wended its way back along Broad Street before returning to Angel Place where it was due to be dismissed at about 3.45pm.

Assistant district commissioner Brian Jenkins said he was pleased with how the colourful ceremony went this year.

“This is one of the biggest occasions in our calendar and we always have a big turnout for it,”

he said.
